Sustainable Rating Systems

The climate of real estate development and building operations has been shifting toward more sustainable practices for new construction and existing buildings. A number of rating systems have been developed to rate and reward sustainable practices including energy and water efficiency, improved indoor air quality, and recycling and reuse of materials. Along with the multiple rating systems comes confusion regarding which ratings system is appropriate for which property type. We have tried to summarize the most commonly-used rating systems to help clearly illustrate what rating systems are available, how they relate to specific property types, and where they may be required due to legislation. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all rating systems available, nor is the goal to advocate for one rating system over another.
